Happy July 4th

N173 July 4thAs we close out June and begin July, everyone in the US is preparing themselves for the July 4th holiday.  Along with cookouts, lake trips, fireworks and an extra day off work, I hope everyone will take the time to remember what the day is about.

On July 2, 1776, the members of the Continental Congress all became traitors to the crown when they voted for independence.  On July 4th, Thomas Jefferson and a committee, including John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, presented the Declaration of Independence to the Continental Congress and it was approved as the message to be sent to King George.  On that day, lawyers, doctors, farmers and businessmen took a stand for their freedoms and rights with the full knowledge that they would face certain death if the colonies lost their battle for independence.

As we confront today’s world, a world that has become so divided, let us remember that 39 men placed their’s and their family’s lives in jeopardy to ensure that we all were guaranteed basic freedoms.  They did this so we could all be who we are at heart while respecting the basic rights of others.  They did this so we can all be free.

Let’s all take a moment to thank these men, their families, and every man, woman and child who answered the call to arms and fought for our freedom then…and every soldier, sailor, airman and marine who has answered the call to defend our nation since.
