Grad School Life

N261 Grad School LifeWhen you start graduate school, especially as a working professional, one of the first things they tell you is that you need a space in your home to keep as your own and keep your studies away from it.  They recommend keeping your bedroom as a bedroom only so that your body doesn’t associate your place of rest as a place to study.

While most try to keep the studies out of the bedroom, we all fail at one level or another.

It only took me about six weeks of grad school before my bedroom turned into a secondary study space in my home.  After long days at work, I was often in bed with my laptop and a stack of books either finishing my reading for the week or working on a paper that was due that coming weekend.  I can’t even count the number of nights I would wake up at 3am with my face on the laptop keyboard or with it in my lap.  It was crazy.

All of that craziness, balancing the work with school with trying to have a life outside of the two of those other responsibilities meant clutter abounded in my bedroom.  Looking at this picture…this would be my bedroom on day two after cleaning it.

I am often asked if taking on the burden of grad school while working was worth it.  My answer?  Absolutely!  The dedication it has taken to to study and work and take care of myself has truly taught me a lot about what I am capable of.  I’ve learned a great deal about balancing priorities and taking time for myself.

The good thing for me…the grad school journey is almost done.  I just have to finish this semester of internship and take my national comp exams and I am done!

Five years ago, I decided I wanted better career choices for myself.  In December…I will have completed what I set out to do.
