Reading Space

N303 Reading Space BlogMy paternal grandparents were both avid readers.  Other than news and sports, they rarely watched TV.  Instead, they would settle in with a good book, a recent periodical or the newspaper and spend hours reading with music playing in the background.  The family farm, which was a second home to them, had one room that was fittingly just named “The Library” as it had shelves covering over half the wall space and was filled with books.

It know it bothered my grandparents that I wasn’t an avid reader like they were, especially during the summers when we were always out on the farm.  It wasn’t that I didn’t like to read, per say.  It was the fact that reading was and continues to be difficult for me.  I have dyslexia and ADHD and so to sit down and read a book was truly a challenge for me and still is today.  Of course, ADHD wasn’t even considered as a condition back then and since I did well in school, no one ever tested me for dyslexia until I was in college.

While my grandfather would sit in his big chair in the den to read, my grandmother always retired to the formal living room for her reading time.  I don’t know why, but she preferred sitting in there to read her novels and non-fiction favorites.  It was always the same when we found her in there.  She was bundled up under an afghan her mother had made for her in the 40’s when she was pregnant with my father.  She also had her daily snack and either coffee or sweet tea on the table next to her, along with her distance glasses on top of her head and her reading glasses nestled firmly across her nose.  Whenever we went to visit them, that was the first thing we saw as you could see her reading spot right as you entered the front door.

Her spot didn’t look that different from the one above.  Funny how a picture in world can stir all of those old childhood memories. ♥
