Pain Can Be A Gift

N390 Pain Can Be A Gift Blog

Ok…before you freak out about the title, I am not saying that I want to experience pain in life, but it is a reality of the world we live in.  There is a lot of pain we experience that is completely unnecessary.  However, much like the child learning not to touch the stove top because it will burn them and hurt, there is pain we must experience in order to grow.

I’ve spent a good portion of my morning talking with a dear friend about some of our struggles in life.  Struggles that have lead to self doubt, problems in daily life, impacted our ability to achieve our goals and so on and so forth.  Now, the pain she and I experienced earlier in life that has had such a profound impact on us now, much of it was largely unnecessary and beyond our control.  However…that pain has also built resilience in both of us.

She and I both have had a lot of struggles.  Those struggles have been evident in our academics, home lives, relationships and probably a dozen other areas of our lives we have discussed.  We have both made progress and we have both taken steps back.  The important thing though is that neither of us has quit.  And, as we often remind each other, we are both seeing the fruits of our progress to overcome what’s happened in our lives.

There is a saying in the BDSM community that it’s a very thin line between pleasure and pain, and the two often intertwine.  The older I get and the more of life I experience, the more I believe this saying is true as we overcome past hurts to achieve new goals and happiness.

The pain that many of us experience in life…discrimination, rejection, abuse, neglect, assaults, death, divorce and other struggles…I wouldn’t wish these things on anyone.  I do believe, however, what defines us as people has less to do with what’s happened to us and more to do with how we overcome and thrive.

Its true that in life we cannot know happiness, success and love without pain, suffering and loss.

Wouldn’t all of our lives be better if we could support one another in finding love, joy and success through our pain instead of living in those dark places for years upon end?
