Supper Club

N405 Supper Club Blog

Shortly after I moved to where I live now *mumbles under her breath* years ago, before my friends started having children, we had a monthly tradition called Supper Club.  I am sure there are others of you out there who have heard of this concept and/or done something similar.

For those who don’t know what I am referring to, once a month we would all get together for dinner. We would rotate which house was hosting and everyone would bring something towards the dinner.  The host house was always responsible for the main course and then everyone else would claim deserts, salads, side dishes, etc.  We also did it with a different theme each month so that we were always trying new recipes.

It was fun!  It made sure that we all got together, despite work schedules.  It helped us, as friends, remain connected.  It also helped expose us to some new dishes and encouraged us all to try new things.

I miss it.

Once my friends started having children, there was little time for a regular Supper Club.  As the gaps between get togethers increased, Supper Club eventually became a thing of the past.

Now I understand and respect why it happened.  If I were a parent, I would hope my friends would expect that my children would come first.  However, I did always wish that we had started it back up again as the children got older.  Then we could have watched all the kids playing together while we ate and enjoyed our cocktails.  It didn’t though and so we have seen each other less and less over the years.

I’m hoping that over the next few years, as my friends’ children begin to go off to college, we can start up the tradition of Supper Club again.  It would be nice to spend more time with those friends.  They’re good people.  Many of these friendships go all the way back to college.  Some of these people have stood by me during my darkest days.  It would be nice to reconnect and rebuild those friendships that life’s responsibilities have interfered with.

I mean, when you think about it too, none of them have ever seen the real me…referring to being the authentic me that I am now.  Wouldn’t that be a nice change?
