Lunch Along The River

N431 Lunch Along The River Blog

I… need… spring… weather…

Mother Nature is kind of pissing me off right now with these back and forth temperatures.  Nice and warm for a few days… Then chilly for a few days…  I just need spring.  Especially since we didn’t get much of a spring last year.

One of my favorite things about spring here is being able to have lunch along the James River.  My office is only about four black from the James and so its an easy walk to take for lunch.  Its extra fun in the later part of the spring when I get to see all the children playing and swimming in the river as the temperatures rise.

An added bonus to going down to the river for lunch is all of the old, historic ruins down there.  Being right at the fall line of the James, and also having one of the first canal systems in the US running right along the James…its a history buff’s dream.  *puts on her dork hat here*  On the days I decide to walk along the river before going back to the office, I will stop and read the various historic markers and just enjoy the view of the buildings that have decayed over the years.

What’s even better is the city and state have made most of the land around the James River into parks over the past 40 years.  This means everything is preserved now.  Whether its the old iron works, the Civil War prison, the tobacco warehouses or some other sign of the industry the city had in the 1700’s and 1800’s, its a picturesque view as you stroll along the bike and walking paths and listen to the sounds of the river.

As I think about leaving this city for a new life somewhere else, lunch along the James is one of the things I will truly miss.  Especially over the past seven years since my office moved so close to the river, those lunches during the spring and fall have become a way to recharge my batteries during a chaotic workday.  They help keep me sane.  And with me living in the suburbs and not getting into the city much on the weekends, it does allow me to feel connected to all of the history in the city.

We have a cooler spell of temps that have moved into the area over the past few days.  Maybe, just maybe, one day this week it will be warm enough to sneak down to the river.  If it does, I know exactly where my first lunch there of 2019 will be. ♥
