Fall is one of those times I really miss the old family homestead.
When we sold the family homestead following my uncle’s death, I knew I would miss it…but had no idea I would miss it this much. I miss it all the time…it was a place to go to so I could escape from the stresses of home and life and just be surrounded by the warm memories of family and our times together. And in the fall…Mother Nature’s fireworks show was always amazing.
The falls were always the best times to visit home and enjoy time at the farm. We always found a weekend in the fall to get everyone together. College football would be on the TV, my uncle would be tending bar and telling stories. We would share what all had happened over the previous few months. And we would all laugh watching the kids play outside.
Walks were always amazing too.
With all the hardwood trees at the farm, there was never a shortage of fall colors. I would often take walks, whether by myself or with other family members, on the various roads around the farm. The long drive was covered on both sides by maples, oaks and walnut trees. The garden area and this gorgeous view down to the river. And when I would walk to the pond, I would see the fish jumping as the leaves lightly fell on the water. They were the perfect picturesque scenes. Its a shame I didn’t take more pictures when I had the opportunity.
Thankfully I have those memories. Thankfully, we had the times together that we did there. I did hear a few months back that the person who bought the farm decided to just keep the land and sell the house and a bit of land surrounding that. If the house is still on the market the next time I get home, I may have to sneak out there and take a walk down the driveway again for old times sake. If I could make it down before all the leaves have fallen, that would be even better.
Of course, I may get daring (for me) and just take a walk down the drive if someone has bought it. So long as I avoid the house itself, do you think I would get in too much trouble for trespassing?
