The Laundry Can Wait

N679 Laundry Can Wait Blog

When I was married, my ex lived by this very rigid schedule and set of expectations.

The house had to be cleaned by 9pm on Fridays…

Laundry had to be finished and folded by 11am Saturday morning…

The trip to the grocery store had to be done by 2pm Saturday…

It was bizarre.  I could never figure out why she lived her live in this way.  Whenever we would go on vacation, it was the same way.  She would plan out almost every minute of every day we were away.  When we took a cruise one fall, I was so tired from the schedule she had put together that I swear I was more exhausted when I got home than I was when left for the cruise.

Now, I know we have to have deadlines in life.  I know we need to keep schedules.  Whether it’s work, events, personal obligations, etc., we have to maintain some set of schedule to get things done.  I never had a problem with that.  My problem, in the case of my marriage, was there was no flexibility for other events to happen…

Or even for enjoying life.

IN the case of our marriage, very early on it made me feel like if I just wanted to do something spontaneous and fun for us, as a couple, that it couldn’t be done.  It quickly lead to me not trying anymore, something I own.  But when you try to do those things and they get rejected because it doesn’t fall within “the schedule,” you really do just throw in the towel and say to hell with it.

As world events have forced us to slow down, I hope that all of us are taking a moment to look at our partners, siblings, parents, children, etc. and take stock of those special moments that are, all too often, missed.  They are missed because we are running around trying to keep a schedule or meeting arbitrary, self imposed obligations.  I mean, I’m not saying that we just blow off everything.  But seriously, as we start to return to a normal life, remember this…

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your relationships is to decide that the laundry can wait. ♥
