Arriving In 30 Minutes

N681 Untitled Blog

When I got home last night, I was about done.  I was physically and emotionally exhausted.  Between events with my father and some of the frustrating news about, well, you know this whole pandemic thing…I got home just feeling like I had been kicked around most of the week.  My mood was shot and I wasn’t looking forward to the evening.  I was actually considering being in bed by 10.

Then…then I got a message from my friend Kate…

Kate and I have known each other for about three years now.  We meet back when I was in the music scene.  She DJ’ed at one of the clubs I worked at and when she started there, I was asked to host for her.  I agreed and by the end of that first night working together, she and I were already good friends.  Over the course of the months that followed, Kate become one of my closest friends in SL.  Skype calls were the rule, not the exception.  She knew all my dark secrets and painful memories…as well as my joys and successes.  And I knew hers.

When I quit the music scene and began the move to blogging, our conversations became fewer and farther between…but our friendship never changed.  Our friendship has been the type where it didn’t matter if we talked every day or once every nine months, we have always been there for each other.  When her precious kitty wasn’t doing well, I stayed up with her until 3am on Skype.  When I was struggling with my HRT or in tears because of other things hampering my ability to present full time, Kate was on Skype with me.  She’s even been checking on me all week as I have dealt with things with my dad.

She is one of my SL friends who I have full intention of meeting in RL.  We have already talked about me travelling to Canada to visit her…and her popping down to Virginia for a visit here.  And, once all this madness is over…we are going to make those trips happen.

So last night, I got home…absolutely foul mood from my day at work.  I was exhausted from the week, from everything with my dad and with work and COVID.  I swear if I had been dating anyone, I probably would have ripped his head off the moment I walked in the door. lol  I set my bags down and walked my dog, grabbed a light dinner and sat down, logging into SL.

As soon as I logged in, I got a message from Kate.

We started off with our usual back and forth and it wasn’t long she said she had a video she wanted to share with me.  See, Kate lives in Calgary and she is beyond excited to show me around her city when I am able to visit.  So, in the interest of giving me a three minute tour of the city she loves, she wanted me to watch the video…and so I did.

I was only about 45 seconds into the video before I started tearing up.  The video wasn’t just this beautiful display of Calgary by a local producer.  Along with the amazing footage was, as Kate described it, a love letter from the video’s producer to the city.  As I listened to the words, I thought how that letter could have been any letter from any parent to their child, any man or woman to their significant other, any friend to another.  It was, to me, an absolutely beautiful and heartfelt letter.

And in that letter, the writer shared that while social isolation and stay at home orders are incredibly difficult, and grow harder each day…they are so important as a community comes together to protect each other from an unseen intruder.

Living in a city that just saw armed protesters converge on our capital building (which my office is one block from) and hearing all of these people demanding that businesses be opened so they can get their haircuts, manicures, beers, etc…this producer so beautifully described why we all needed to come together now, more than ever, to get through this.  And that by staying apart…we were essentially bonding and fighting together.

So, after one hell of a cry from watching this video and, of course, almost cussing Kate out for making me cry, lol…I couldn’t help but feel uplifted because here was someone, someone with a voice, who got it…and was spreading the message of why we need to do what we are doing.

I don’t know how you do it, Kate, but you are one of those friends who always seems to know when I need something to lift me up when I don’t even know I need it.  You have been a rock for me…someone I always know I can depend on no matter what.  The love and acceptance you have shown me since the first day we met has meant more than I can ever put into words.  You are one of those friends whom I consider family and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

And thank you for both lifting my spirits this week…and for reminding me that I have a plane ticket to purchase soon!!!  I can’t wait to walk out of that terminal in Calgary and hug each other until we both turn blue. ♥
