The Outer Banks of North Carolina always held a special place in her heart. As a child, her family had vacationed there almost every summer. There were so many fond memories stretched along those sandy beaches and every time she crossed the bridge from the mainland onto the islands, she would just smile as her mind was flooded with all of those wonderful memories.
The Outer Banks had continued to be her vacation destination of choice as she grew older. She had traveled to other places. Savannah, Charleston, Mobile Bay, Pensacola, Key West, the Jersey Shore and Myrtle Beach were just some of the other beaches she had visited over the years. As much as she loved visiting each of those places…in her heart, they never measured up to places named Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Duck, Hatteras and Ocracoke.
On this morning, she crossed the dune onto the beach and closed her eyes. She remembered how it felt when she was a little girl and her father would hold her hand as they took their daily walks on the beach together. Without even realizing it, she squeezed her hand as though she was squeezing her daddy’s hand. She smiled at the thought, wishing he was there with her.
Suddenly, she just stopped in tracks, feeling her feet sink into the warm sand. Her smile grew but softened at the same time. Despite being alone, she could swear she felt her father squeeze her hand back.
She quietly whispered into the soft breeze, “I love you too, Daddy.”
