Christmas Memories

N346 Christmas Memories Blog

Wow!  Can you believe that Christmas is here again?  By the time I get this posted, some parts of the world will already be enjoying Christmas Day while the rest of us are still enjoying Christmas Eve.  For those of us who celebrate Christmas, this is a wonderful time of year celebrated with family and friends as we all prepare to close out our year with hopes of a better 2019.

I wonder though…what do each of you think about when you think of Christmases past?

Over the past few days, I have thought a lot about what memories I hold dear from Christmas past.  What do I remember?  What has made Christmas special for me over the years?  When I think about the holidays, what are the important things that come to mind?  With all of the commercialization that happens with Christmas and the amount of money spent on presents increasing each year, what do we remember from Christmases past as we grow older?

Here are some of my favorite Christmas memories…

I was 6 years old and my father gave my a train set for Christmas.  I don’t remember the specifics of the train set.  What I remember is it being set up in our living room and my father and I playing with it for hours on end.  From the time he gave that to me until the time of his death, my best talks with my father all occurred around that train set.

One Christmas Eve, my sister and I drove to my brother’s base to greet him as he returned from a tour in the Middle East.  He had been overseas for six months, my sister was living on the West Coast and neither of us had seen him since the previous Christmas.  It was such an emotional homecoming and one of the few times my brother cried in front of the two of us.

I remember attending the midnight candlelight services with my brother and sister at the church back home for years and years.

I remember the white sheet my grandparents hung over the living room entry way every Christmas Eve.  We weren’t allowed to enter that room until my grandfather would take the sheet down.  I love the fact that my sister has continued that tradition with her own family.

I remember Christmas with my sister and her family a few years ago.  I got to write the note from Santa to my nephew that year.  That just made my nephew’s day because he didn’t recognize the writing and so he honestly thought Santa had left him a letter.

I remember how my one uncle would give us board games for Christmas.  Before wrapping the games, he would open them and figure out how to cheat at the games without getting caught.  It took us years to figure out he was doing this!

And from this year…I will remember a very sweet message I just received from my mother’s baby sister.  She is one of the few on my mom’s side who has accepted me and she just sent me this message…
“Merry Christmas.  Sitting at the start of mass and thinking of you and M.  God bless and I hope you have a blessed holiday.  My hope is that next year the rest of the family will have accepted you and you can join us for Christmas.  We love you.”

I will also remember the incredibly sweet and meaningful messages I received from friends, old and new, wishing me a Merry Christmas. ♥

Looking back, I don’t remember gifts.  I remember moments.  I remember people.  I remember smells, tastes, touches, sounds, sights and feelings.  Those are what I cherish most from my Christmas scrapbook.

I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays.  Thank you all for being a part of my life.

Love,
Tiff ♥
