The Carriage House

N678 The Carriage House Blog

One thing that is really neat in Virginia is all of the old homes.  Many of the homes that were built prior to 1900 have one thing in common…carriage houses.

Ironically, it doesn’t matter if you find the old home in the rural or urban setting.  These structures seem to be present at the majority of those old homes.  In the country, many of those old homes have been converted to tractor barns, storage sheds, man caves, she sheds or are just used for storage.  We had one at the old family farm that was used by my uncle to store is classic Desota in when he wasn’t working on it.

Here in the city, many of those old carriage houses have been turned into loft apartments.  When I first moved here, I looked at several of these apartments along the (locally) famous Monument Avenue.  The people who owned the properties typically stored their own cars in the lower part of the carriage house but the upstairs were turned into these amazingly renovated places.  Many were rented to the mid 20’s to upper 30’s crowd who wanted to be close to the city’s nightlife.

Remember my Aunt Po who I wrote about a few weeks ago?  She has one at her house back home too.  Like many of the people here in Richmond, she converted it into a really cute one bed loft style apartment.  She doesn’t rent it very often.  Typically only a few months of the year to interns working in the area.  She likes to have it empty at Christmas for when the family comes home.  Since we sold the family farm, her house has become our “home base” not just for her own children, but also for me, my sister and our brother’s family.  Usually, I am the one who gets to stay out there.  It’s a nice little bit of privacy and peace with so many people in the house.

But between the carriage house and my aunt’s home, is a truly cozy backyard that is our family gathering spot when the weather is nice.

As soon as these stay at home orders are lifted, I think I will be making an early trip back home and spending some time with her…and enjoying the amazing work she did on her carriage house.
